I was lucky enough to be able to visit Malaya this summer for a wedding of a friend. The visit was only for five days but it was nice to be able to visit KL and drive out to Pangkor. Downtown KL was much as I remembered it despite having grown tremendously. Chinatown was absolutely the same and in the heart of the stalls I don't think you could have been able to tell the difference from '82. Suburban KL, however, has grown tremendously and the city appears to be reaching out to embrace Kalang. Beyond the city's suburbs much is the same until you reach the beaches, which are fully developed for all levels of tourism. I was impressed with the wealth that oil has brought Malaysia in the last 20 years. This country is as modern and trendy as London and the vibrancy of the economy reminds me of Silicon Valley in the 90s. Unfortunately, it has also lost some of its charm and it is not cheap. I was spending something like $ 250 a night at the Regent and the more exclusive beach resorts have chalets starting at $ 800. I don't know whether this is a good place. I could not register through the home page. My sister, Cigdem has been telling me about your page and how wonderful it is. Now, finally I've got the chance. What have I been doing? Well, I don't know if you remember, I like Cigdem was in KL from 76-81 and would have been a 1984 graduate. Unfortunately I left in 9th grade and graduated in Ankara, Turkey where I continued with medical training. Prior to finishing medical school I came to the States for some clerkships and decided I would continue with my residency in the States. Currently I am an Anesthesiologist at Northwestern University in Chicago,IL. Married 4 years ago also to a physician(neurologist). Doing well. Hope to hear from you... Meltem |
